Spoiler alert: this shoot involved a slug. And some puke. I mean, would it really be an authentic family session with little kids if there wasn’t a hiccup of some kind?
Family photography sessions are always an adventure for me. Often, families are coming to me for the unposed, genuine shots. Those will always be the types of shoots that not only fill my own heart and artistic vision, but that I know my clients will love both now and years down the road when they look back on their lives when their kids were babies and little ones.
This family was just the sweetest. The hands-down-absolute sweetest. We had so much fun running around and playing, getting fun and snuggly shots at my favorite place to shoot, the incredible Highlands Mansion in Fort Washington, PA. We had gorgeous sun, and beautiful red vines on a red barn, and smiles and laughter galore.
And then…a slug happened. More specifically, a slug on a leaf got into their son’s mouth after we did some shots of him lying down in the leaves. Yuck! And then…poor little guy got sick from it.
But you know what? Kids are SO resilient. He hung out with his mama while I took some shots of dad and baby alone and after a little bit of a break we picked right back up to get some more sweet shots of them dancing together.
You see, some of the “best” shoots of mine don’t always go smoothly. In fact, I find that the ones that last in my own mind as the most real, fun, and vibrant often have a tantrum or a boo-boo that we have to pause for. Embrace the chaos, just keep smiling and laughing, pause when we need to, and know that I will always, always look for the beauty & light in these moments for you.
