I love, love, love my newborn sessions. I love that I get to document families as they grow. I love that I get to capture families in their own homes, finding unique lighting and angles both in and outside and that they'll be able to show to their kids as they grow, "this is where we lived/how the house looked when you were born!". I love the babies' little wrinkly feet and squishiness. And how sometimes they don't want to settle and all it takes is Mama's voice or Dad holding the baby into his chest for a warm snuggle, and there we go, we have yet another gorgeous image to take.
You know what's funny though? Aside from the gorgeous new little being I get to work with, I absolutely adore being able to work with their older siblings, too. While we call them "newborn sessions", quite honestly, a lot of lifestyle sessions revolve somewhat around the older siblings. They are curious about me, my camera, and typically at this transition in their life to a new baby, they're wanting attention! So "the lady" (as so many little ones call me-- it cracks me up) with the camera that shows up at their house and gives them that attention for a few hours, in between newborn shots! And they get to see what they look like when I take their photograph. And they're so excited that they get to actually hold their baby brother or sister! And they're so proud to show off their toys and tell me all about their favorite things, and it's just the sweetest thing in the world to be able to capture my clients' older children during this amazing moment of adjusting to big brother/sisterhood.
This family's older daughter certainly stole the show while her new little sister contently and preciously dozed off for most of her session. She intently watched her sisters' solo, posed part of the session, anxiously waiting for the moment she got to hold her for their photos taken together. And she toured me around the nursery and her room while her baby sister had a snack. She was so gentle and ginger with her new little sister, even politely holding her ears when it got a bit too loud when she did cry (see photo below, it's actually one of my favorite shots because it's so appropriate and true to life). This family is going to have so much fun raising these little angels together, I'm sure they're going to be the best of friends.
